Past Events

November 15, 2019: When History Comes to Life: Experiential Pedagogy in the World Language and Social Sciences Classrooms
One-day conference organized by Monica Calabritto, Paolo Fasoli, Kelly Paciaroni, and Julie Van Peteghem

This conference offered tested pedagogical tools meant to help instructors create long-term modules (academic semester/academic year) and short-term activities. Topics related to history serve as the foundation for the development of content-rich material in world languages and social sciences courses at the advanced secondary/college level. You can find our event website here. We will make selected materials from this conference available later this month. To receive this and other announcements, sign up for our mailing list.

March 9, 2019: Online Tools for Language Learning
Mini-workshop led by Erika Mazzer

This workshop focused on online resources — e-learning tools and learning platforms — that can be used to build online modules for language teaching. Following the lesson plan of regular face-to-face classes, these online activities address different learning skills and styles. You can find the instructions on how to use some of these free online resources, such as Playposit, Educaplay, and VoiceThread, here.

February 9, 2019: Music and the World Language Classroom
Mini-workshop led by Fabio Battista

This workshop aimed to provide a theoretical overview and a practical demonstration of the benefits and potential uses of music in the language classroom, focusing on the case of Italian. Rather than recurring to music as only a means to reinforce knowledge that has been already attained, this workshop gave suggestions on how to employ it as a self-standing pedagogical tool, in both the language and the literature/culture classroom. In addition to honing listening skills and fostering a relaxed learning environment, music can be used as the backbone of an entire class session (or a semester-long course), in which the whole range of skills is involved productively. You can find a sample lesson plan here.

October 19, 2018: Bringing the Museum into the World Language Classroom: A Content-Based Pedagogical Workshop
One-day conference organized by Monica Calabritto, Kelly Paciaroni, and Julie Van Peteghem

In this two-part workshop, presenters discussed and modeled strategies for integrating art and poetry into the world language curriculum in order to increase the level and frequency of class participation. An emphasis was placed on CUNY’s role in supporting content-based learning in grades 7-16 and beyond. You can find our event website here and teaching resources on museum pedagogy here.
